People don't wish to settle down, because it's felt to be a handicap to success, so there's fear and seperation built around relationships. I believe deep down there's a since of longing that can be heard in Margaret's voice, in accordance with the somber downing of chords in the chorus. It's creates a feeling simliar to that which appears when your walking along a road with your head down, sad, and in need a hug. You wan't to be tough, but the courage just isn't there yet.
Week December 4 - 10
Everyboy Dies - J. Cole
A laid back beat is contrasted with an aggresive Cole. He bites right out the gate and demands others to seek protection in anticipation for what's to come. This has been a long time coming, like, really long time. 5 years from their last full length project, and a sprinkle of songs and features later, Bon Iver has finally decided to come back into mainstream music and release a new album this fall titled, 22, A Millon.
22 (Over Soon) brings us back right where we left off, questioning life's purpose, reflecting on childhood shortcomings, and breaking down the intricacies of relationships shattered. This new song is inspiring, ambitious, and has a breathtaking guest vocals (or it might be Justin, im still not sure) that howls on the back end of the track, elevating the intensity and sheer passion the song already conveys.
I couldn't have asked for much more than this, as well as the other single that dropped the same day from the album, and will wait in earnest as the end of the next month becomes a closer and closer reality. It might come over soon.

Luv - Tory Lanez
The 'Say it' rap/r&b artist is back with another summer anthem. Dance-hall appears to be the hit-maker genre of the current, and the Toronto golden boy is taking the style with grace. Sampling Tanto Metro and Devonte’s classic dance-hall single “Everyone Falls In Love" Torey brings the tune to 2016 beautifully. Adding a mesmerizing synthetic texture to the song and gorgeous auto-tuned vocals, this song is meant to be on repetition while the sun on your back and the wind is in your face. Love is fun to find in the summer, everyone's outside socializing and experiencing life and nature all at the same time. However, love can be scary, 'Oops I done fell so deep baby' with the possibility of it hurting, and becoming the victim of its attractive deceptive nature is enough to prevent anyone from acting on it. Torey lets us in on the secret that 'Everyone falls in love sometimes' so all that fear, hate, and regret we attribute to love is nothing singularly felt. We should take the hills with the pitfalls and enjoy the ride. I'll take note and enjoy the ride as well as this magnificent song.
Week June 12-18
Wow - Beck
God level production, the multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles has crafted an outstanding pop tune for this weeks song of the week. With added vocal samples and synth heavy production Beck interestingly decided to go in a new direction with this song. This new style works for him as well, and while some people think this is a direct diss to Kanye West and his critique of his grammy nod (which Kanye did in fact apologize for) I believe there should higher emphasis on the ambitiousness that is going on here. That reigning sythned out flute that floaters all over the track drives your attention while the loud 'WOOOOOW' keeps you up and out of your seat, followed by heavy 808's that beat you with rhythmic adrenaline one after the other. It's such a thrill and screams summer. So without further ado, enjoy 'WOW'.
Week June 5-11
How It's Done - Maren Morris
The spacey guitar riffs mixed in with her delightfully inciting vocals 'How It's Done' is a tune that transcends genres. Maren Morris, the up and coming Country star reigning from Dallas, Texas has stunned me with this tune as well as her debut album. Not only does she sing the most honest and heartfelt lyrics i heard in a while but she does so with such gracefulness. Nothing seems forced, and although she's leading a man into the tumultuous situation that is love, the threat doesn't appear there, and we as the listener seemingly trust her. Merely captivated firstly by the laid back production of this song i was additionally pulled in by Maren's blissful presence on the track. In her seductive tone she explains the situation and sets the scene of her lover 'Moving into the weight that you’ve been wanting to put on me' and instead of being apprehensive she tells him that 'There is no need to be nervous' and concludes by telling him to confide in her and 'Let me show you how it’s done'. Hero is full of stellar tracks like this that showcase the Texan star's graceful delivery and transparent song writing abilities, but 'How It's Done' is a stand alone specialty among the bunch. CHECK IT OUT!
Week May 29 - June 4
Used to Love You - Yuna ft. Jhene Aiko
A match made in heaven. The stellar standout from Yuna’s latest project ‘Chapters’ features the L.A.’s bohemian-styled spiritualist Jhene Aiko in what is an extremely enjoyable tune. The fusions of their voices blend ever so sweetly and serve up in a confident statement that they are over their exes and better than ever. Yuna starts off the song in her usual story like tone and floats all over the cool and crisp production. In comes Jhene who at first listen sounds so remarkably similar to Yuna there is difficulty figuring out which artist is singing which note. This ordeal is more fun than frustrating as the listens increase because the improv vocal performance on the back end of this track demonstrates an immense amount of chemistry between the two lighter toned vocalist. Replay is a must do with this track, and a great summer song to enjoy and empower ones self with.
Week May 22-28
Stop Where You Are- Corrine Bailey Rae
A song about enjoying life as it is in the present rather than fantasizing about an unpredictable future. The British songstresses graces our ears with this heart felt acoustic masterpiece. The simplicity of the strings and melody gives the song it's wise nature. Integral to it's message Corrine lays out her vocals in a very serene and delicate fashion, fixating the listeners ears to capture every line she prophetesses. It also helps that her voice is weightless, floating like a butterfly up into her upper register seamlessly during the chorus then down deep and hidden during the verses. An utterly outstanding record, and something fans of the R&B/Folk singer have been waiting for and properly expecting. She's known for her stripped down acoustic led melodic tunes like 'Put Your Records On' and 'Just Like A Star'. 'Stop Where You Are' surely reaches that tier of musical greatness and excellence in her discography.
Week May 15-21
Jacked Up - Weezer
For a band who's heyday was the 90's they sure capture teenage angst and love frustrations extremely well. That is what we have here in 'Jacked Up', a man in shambles because if he sleeps with the girl, he'll fall in love, but doesn't want to. The song is passionate, and the production is powerful, with drums that pound away at your conscience, and strangle it in submission to the lust of a women body. The subject therefore feels jacked up for his decision, and his flowers die as a result, something he's very upset about. I admire the conviction of the track, it starts with the loud drums and a daringly vulnerable introspective verse erupting within the first 7 seconds, setting the disastrous scene. It's an array of emotions, fluttering all throughout the production with focused back ground focused, layered baselines and whirling chords. The instrumentation reflects the emotions of the soul of a man in that situation. Weezer is not a band that regularly makes my Apple Music or Tidal queue, but with ambitious creative songs like this, there is reason to change that.
Week May 8- 14
I Need a Forest Fire - James Blake ft. Justin Vernon
I'll start off with my initial reaction to a new Justin Vernon and James Blake song surfacing on the internet waves. I was excited, nervous, and anxious, all at the same time. To me, no way could they top the immaculate and intriguing 'Fall Boys Creek Choir' from Blake's 2011 project 'Enough Thunder'. Man, was I wrong. Not only does James and the Wisconsin musical Demi-god architect a masterful audio experience, but they are in such unison the idea of a collaborate project doesn't seem too far impossible. 'I Need a Forest Fire' is about starting over, setting the fire ablaze having things fresh and new for mistakes to be redeemed and solutions to play out. This song is powerful, emotive, from the fluttering keys in the opening to the stimulating and breathtaking 'Woo' from Vernon. One thing I found so captivating about this track is the mystique of its creators, neither Blake nor Vernon are on social media much, their interviews are sparse and far in between, and they rarely delve into their personal lives in any other format other than music. This leaves the music to carry a lot of weight and information it in, something they do more abstractly than directly. I find this method refreshing and inspiring, to magnify the listeners critical listening abilities and to strive for the utmost sufficient experience. I fell in love with the melody of this track from the beginning, the repeating vocals that rides the tempo throughout, and the painstaking honest and vulnerability in the vocal performance by both artist. 'I need a forest Fire' will without a doubt go down as one of my most beloved and cherished tracks of 2016.

Feel No Ways- Drake
First, let's highlight the production on this track. It's poignant and clear synth shifts are hard and dynamic. 40 definitely out did himself here and is showing enormous growth as a producer. Drake's vocal range has increased throughout the album as well, and i enjoy him trying different pitches and patterns with his melodies, especially on 'Feel No Ways'. The lyrics on here are something special too, talking about a girl leaving him after waiting for too long, and not understanding that he was 'let(ting) go of us to show (himself) what (he) could do'. Drake's at his best when he's getting personal about his past relationships and the pain he feels from being left by a girl he thought cared for him. Of coarse, being a global musical icon like Drake comes with its perks, and the level of actual pain and distress this relationships cause him is limited, but he doesn't express it with any less emotion and credibility. This has been in contention with 'Too Good' as my favourite song on the album, I think i may give this song the edge only because i think Rihanna outshines Drake on that track and i want to give drake credit going solo on a singing led song. Here's to 'Feel no way' enjoy :)

Week April 24 - 30
All Night - Beyonce
The confession that was 'Lemonade' will be talked about for years to come (Or at least until the next Beyoncé album) and 'All Night' is the grand finale of it all. What i love so much about this song is its resounding conclusion to infidelity and keeping a marriage strong. She's undoubtedly was hurt, and expresses that all throughout the album, and is still wary about how things will turn out, but without a doubt trust's herself enough now to make it work, and is willing to work with her husband to resolve the problems that lead to the issue. It's a very mature sentiment held throughout the song, as Beyoncé is clearly making references to her husband’s mistake'But every diamond has imperfections’ but is explaining her growth from that, and how from such a bad situation she found out how to come out of it resolved and refurbished ‘and my torturer became a remedy’ cheating or a rocky relationship. Sonically, the track is outstanding, with the plucked guitar strings that are reminiscent of ‘Formations’ leading melody, unbending bass guitar leads, and free-spirited guitar riffs on the entrance to this track. I additionally love her range on this song, where she really raises high into her upper registers during the chorus to extenuate ‘night loooooonng’. It's romantically emotive, and really adds a level of passion and adoration to the song that greatly sums up the pure unbreakable love she has for Jay. The bridge of this track is where she explains how she's recovering from the rough few years of the relationship 'True love breathes salvation back into me, with every tear came redemption'. 'All Night’ is also clearly my favourite song from the album, its addictive chorus and spectacular vibrant vibe (Shout out Diplo) draws me to every day, at least twice, since its release. Heres to happiness, and love.

Hard - Royce da 5'9
The challenge of getting girls is just that for any young adolescent heterosexual male. What Royce comes to show is that it's not all that hard (accept that you have to be successful). Being successful doesn't seem to be that hard for Royce neither, but with his born talent to rhyme in incredibly complex patterns and styles I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. 'Hard' is a standout track from Royce's new album, 'Layers', which is extremely personal and unveils numerous stories in Royce's life that he was previously quiet about. The live-action play performance Royce demonstrates over this illustrious instrumental is typical fun theatrics, if your'e used to musicals. Royce even gives credit to the popular Pulitzer/Grammy winning play 'Hamilton' as his motivation and inspiration for his next move 'to either screen-write a movie, or write a play'. I believe what i loved so much about the song was Royce's willingness to try something new sonically, and completely nail it. I couldn't have been happier with the musical arrangement and Royce's vocals, he has some pipes on him there. The song is additionally very expressive and exudes the realization Royce is under while belting over the lengthy 5 plus minute track. If you haven't listened to 'Hard' yet, please do, you'll be surprised at how well it turned out. Also, check out Layers, it's a solid hip-hop album with a strong new sound to it.

Week April 10-16
Angela - The Lumineers
'Angelaaaaa! spent your whole life running away'. This song portrays such simple, yet the purest of love and adoration for a girl in trouble, a girl whose in a bad spot, pressured by a town that 'raised you up, just to cut you down' but it was still the 'only love I've ever found'. Love transcends trivial human constructs like money, class, and status. Like love, the Lumineers break through the typical barriers of a love song and string together a beautiful simplistic melodic tune for the ears to pleasantly enjoy. Strong sheer emotion seems to be one of the highlights of the Lumineers last album that they bring to the 'Cleopatra'. Juxtaposing the end of Angela to the following somber line depicts how hurt and real the passion for Angela is to the singer, he neither wants to underrepresented his love, nor offend her. Only a few times a year does such a minimalist track make my favourite year-end list, but Angela will no doubt stand the test of time for 2016, and prove to be one of the greatest songs I've heard all year. If you haven't listened to Angela yet, please do, you've reminiscent over the one that always had your heart, even though your brain told you no.

Week April 3-9
Japanese Breakfast - Everybody Wants to Love You
This amazing track has an outstandingly stark retro feel. Reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac in their rock pop mid-80's prime. The dancing guitar riffs, pumping chorus vocals, and faded synthesizes take me on a joy ride through some love trip I'm going on. It is to my understanding that the lead singer of Japanese Breakfast, Michelle Zauner, made this album after hearing that her mother was sick. In fact this is not her primary band, and this album is a series of cuts that she had in storage. With that being said, I was immensely impressed with the level of emotional expression and instrumentation on this record. I absorbed the state of mind Michelle was currently end, dating back her mother to a happier time, when she's getting breakfast and enjoying life. The chorus is repetitious and steadfast, but for a reason, she is trying to convince her mother, and maybe herself, that despite the hardship of her current condition, everybody wants to love her and that everything will be okay. The song takes you away from all your troubles, and in the wake of a family tragedy like imminent death those simple words mean the world. I'm always glad when an artist can find therapy in music and really ease through the pain of loss.

Week March 27 - April 2
In + Out - dvsn
dvsn is one of those artist that come along once every decade or so and gives you renowned hope in a genre. Of coarse he can be a tease like Frank Ocean and Bon Iver and resurrect the mainstream for a quick year, act as Kanye and Taylor Swift did and set a new generation of musical expression in order, or quietly lead by example like Radio Head or Daft Punk . Hopefully, we don't have to think about anytime soon, however, the talent is there, now lets get back to the review. 'In + Out' is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in R&B in years. The ability dvsn has to fluctuate his vocal melodies is masterful, and the ways by which he conveys such strong emotions in the easiness of highs and lows he projects leaves you in glorified awe. Nineteen85 provides those airy synths and light keys to brush you through the delicacies of dvsn's sensual lyrics. 'Tell me how you like it harrrrrd corrrrre, and ill do what you say'. The song exemplifies dvsn's fantasies about how he will sexually please this women, he wants her to tell him how she likes it, and he'll act accordingly. 'Tell me, what you want to do, i want to go in and out of your body baby' is how the chorus rings off, and man does that image come to picture. Those Ye-esque goblin sounding background vocals are contrasting and add a level to a the song that is euphoric. The chorus hits you in the chest where dvsn's vocals didn't already touch your soul. It's a completely satisfying audio joyride, and something I'll be listening to all year round.

The Toronto crooner PARTYNEXTDOOR shifts gears in this subtle, yet poignant, love song. Here the ovosound label mate confounds truths to his girl that she's right, he doesn't visit her place enough. The song is coupled with terrific thought provoking lines from PND such as the 'I hear you talkin' 'bout we a lot, oh, you speak French now?'. The blame is to go around as well, as label head, and current king of rap Drake joins PND in the confession. Despite this fact, Drake isn't as forthcoming, or willing to admit to his faults, this is apparent in his opening line 'Why you gotta start girl, why you gotta start?' and is accompanied with insults towards the girls current man 'Just 'cause he got a heart don't mean he got heart'. Eventually, however, like PND, Drake submits and admits that he could have been open to visiting her for a change 'This thing is getting one-sided, I can't even lie to you right now'. What makes this song so special, and the reason i put it up as my song of week is because of the rarity of such a topic in popular music. I can't remember the last time a relatively known male hip-hop artist (PND still has some time, but Drake sure is there) made a single off the girls point of view, and doesn't disregard it or bash it in the process. This is a breath of fresh air, a change of times perhaps, and if not, I'll sure enjoy this moment while it lasts.
